[attr="class","likedotitle2"]FACTIONS, RANKS, AND REPUTATION
[attr="class","likedoinfo"]On The New Tomorrow, there are six distinct factions that populate the world: heroes, villains, vigilantes, civilians, students, and teachers. All of these factions are separated by both common ideologies and status in Japanese society as a whole, and these factions also make up the member groups on the site.
Within each faction are ranks that describe the character's place and public image in the world. This is achieved by a special stat connected to each character known as reputation. Every character begins play at the first rank within their faction, and it takes a special amount of reputation to rise into a separate rank. In order to earn reputation, a character must do something exceptionally noteworthy, such as participating in a user-created operation or participating in events made by staff. You can read more about the operation system here. The largest benefit to earning reputation is that it is the only stat that determines faction rank lists that come out every month. These lists are completely canon and harken to the notoriety of your character in the world--the characters with the highest reputation in their faction take the number one spot, and it descends by reputation number. This is a fun way to encourage friendly competition in the user base!
Another function of reputation and faction ranking is that your rank determines whether your character can take on exceptionally difficult operations or not. All five ranks correspond to one difficulty level for an operation, and the more difficult an operation is, the more reputation and experience it awards upon completion.
Through the course of a roleplay, characters can change factions. When doing this, their faction ranking carries over into their new faction so that they are of an equivalent rank in their new faction. This does not apply to students. Students instead start at rank one of whatever faction they enter upon graduating.
All characters on The New Tomorrow will start at the very first rank in their faction unless you are making a student, in which case these characters can start at any year. If you'd like to start at a rank higher than the first, there is the option to take a look through our Rank Claims thread. This allows you to start at a higher rank at the cost of being required to be active and being judged to a higher standard by staff.
Below are explanations of all factions and rankings on the site.
Young men and women in training to become heroes, all students are enrolled at Shin-U.A, although this faction also includes students enrolled in the general education course, the business course, or the support course. In a slight modification from the normal reputation system, students cannot use their reputation to enter new ranks and must pass their exams in order to rise in the ranks.
I. First Year: All students start here, although members may make students that are in higher classes through a rank claim. First years are capable of completing operations of bronze difficulty.
I. Second Year: In the middle of the pack, these students have more experience than a first-year but less maturity than a third-year. Second-years are capable of completing operations of bronze difficulty.
I. Third Year: Closer to graduation than ever, third-years are just about ready to enter hero society and make a name for themselves. Third-years are capable of completing operations of bronze and silver difficulty.
The hopeful faces for society, heroes are the celebrities of The New Tomorrow, people that regularly make appearances on the television and are of frequent discussion. They regularly fight crime and try to keep peace in the cities, although they will never have a shortage of enemies and rivals. Unless you are making a rank claim, heroes will always start at the first rank.
I. Sidekick: Most heroes start out by training under a fully-fledged pro-hero and are known as sidekicks. Although less experienced, sidekicks still have all the training necessary to become a full hero and are on their way to the top. Sidekicks are able to complete bronze operations.
II. Rising Star: Although still mostly unknown to the public, these heroes have made a few appearances and are steadily gaining traction in hero society. These are the heroes that the newspapers have marked as exciting newcomers, and they will always be analyzed to see whether they have potential or not in the eyes of society. Rising Stars are capable of completing silver and below operations. [Requires 25 reputation
III. New Sensation: By now, heroes at this rank have received an adequate amount of media attention and are now known to quite a few civilians. Although not necessarily in mainstream culture, these heroes have made themselves known and are on a great path to becoming more popular with every passing day. New Sensations are capable of completing gold and below operations. [Requires 115 reputation]
IV. Revered: These heroes have been around for a while and have wormed their ways into the public consciousness. Slang terms and phrases have begun to involve their hero aliases and their movements are frequently recorded by hero blogs or tabloids. Revered heroes are capable of completing platinum and below operations. [Requires 325 reputation]
V. Ubiquitous Legend: The kinds of heroes that will be told of in history books, these heroes have transcended country borders in their popularity. They offer a shining face of hope to everyone in the world, and to say that you do not know their name is to breathe a crime. Ubiquitous Legends are capable of completing diamond and below operations. [Requires 725 reputation]
The people that lurk in the shadows, villains, for one reason or another, are hellbent on tearing down hero society. To the public their motives are unknown and their ways even more nebulous, making them a frightening threat to the stability of the country. These kinds of people are only told about in legends to frighten children and for good reason. With their complicated history in Japan, every villain is a scoundrel and every hero is automatically pursuing any criminal that pops up in their path.
I. Thug: Petty thieves and aimless gangsters, these villains have a philosophy they'd like to carry out but little understanding nor experience of how to do so. They are just getting started in terrorizing hero society, and they are not afraid to get their hands dirty. Thugs are capable of completing bronze operations.
II. Crook: Rising past needless street violence, these villains have graduated to bigger and better targets. They hit buildings and businesses in support of hero society or scuffle with heroes in the streets. Although heroes have these villains on their radar, they are not the number one priority. Crooks are capable of completing silver and below operations. [Requires 25 reputation
III. Rogue: Rogues are becoming serious nuisances for heroes and make bigger and better fusses in the streets. By now the media has caught on and is calling on heroes for action. Rogues might have their own crime groups or be high ranking in the crime groups of others. Rogues are capable of completing gold and below operations. [Requires 115 reputation]
IV. Convict: Now seen as a threat to public safety, convicts have been targeted by both the media and the government, making convicts more secretive about their identities and more careful in their crimes. They are whispered about on the street and many villains know their name. Convicts are capable of completing platinum and below operations. [Requires 325 reputation]
V. Public Enemy: A sensation of fear, a Public Enemy incites fear and anxiety in the community and has become the top target for the government and hero society. They often pull the strings behind many villain operations and act as an undeniable source of inspiration for new villains. Public Enemies are capable of completing diamond and below operations. [Requires 725 reputation]
Straddling the line between legality and illegality, vigilantes are free radicals in the system. While they are technically breaking the law, they take justice into their own hands and work for public happiness without accepting the publicity that heroes are regularly fed. They work in the darkness and avoid arrest, the representation of chaotic good morality.
I. Initiate: These vigilantes have become disillusioned with both hero society and villain society. They don't have much experience, but they have a strong sense of justice and a need to see it carried out. Barely a blip on the map of vigilantes, they seek justice on a smaller scale than most. Initiates are capable of completing bronze operations.
II. Prodigy: Just beginning to make a name for themselves, prodigies have managed to establish themselves as free thinkers but are barely recognized by the public. They have enacted their code on a marginally larger scale than initiates, but they remain entrenched in shadows. Prodigies are capable of completing silver and below operations. [Requires 25 reputation
III. Firebrand: Firebrands are vigilantes who have seen corruption and have destroyed it wherever capable. Complete with experience and guts, the government has noticed them and is eager to take them in, but have appreciated their dedication to their ideals. The people they help spread their name among the streets. Firebrands are capable of completing gold and below operations. [Requires 115 reputation]
IV. Commander: Harbingers of a new age, the government has begun to fear the power and determination of these vigilantes, still stung from revolutions and the like. Where the government fears commanders, the people do not and instead hail these vigilantes as folk heroes, seeing them as capable and reliable and representing their own ideals more than heroes do. Commanders are capable of completing platinum and below operations. [Requires 325 reputation]
V. Warden: Perpetrators of justice, where law fails wardens step in to enact heavenly punishment upon those who routinely go unpunished. The champion of the people, even heroes fear wardens, and streets clear up of crime when wardens are rumored to be in town. Fear enacts justice and wardens are determined to keep the peace through whatever means possible. Wardens are capable of completing diamond and below operations. [Requires 725 reputation]
Public officials, trade workers, and governmental associates, civilians make up the backbone of society. For every hero there needs to be a community to protect, and these characters make up that community. Where the operations civilians might undertake could be less intense than those of villains, heroes, or vigilantes, they are still pertinent and important to running a society.
I. Nobody: This is what most of the population slots into. While the title implies these people truly are unimportant, their individual stories and daily lives weave into the fabric of reality. Every action makes up society and works into a large machine. Nobodies are capable of completing bronze operations.
II. Public Servant: The people who are known around their towns but are unknown beyond that. They help their community run and they are looked up to by those who are aware of them, but they rarely appear on television and work in silence. Public Servants are capable of completing silver and below operations. [Requires 25 reputation
III. Local Celebrity: Well known for their deeds and actions, the local celebrity is not nationally known but is instead a person people know by their face without learning their name. Never far behind the curve, they keep up with trends and make sparse appearances on television. Local Celebrities are capable of completing gold and below operations. [Requires 115 reputation]
IV. C-List Celebrity: These celebrities' names are known nationally and they are recognized on the street, usually spending their time trying to operate their daily lives and avoiding the attention of the press. They make frequent television appearances and can be recognized by a small number of common traits. C-List Celebrities are capable of completing platinum and below operations. [Requires 325 reputation]
V. A-List Celebrity: Famous beyond country borders, it has evolved into a cultural pass-time to track this celebrity's movements. Stalked, paraded, and championed, for most people, meeting this celebrity is a highlight of their life. Anywhere they go they are bound to be recognized and given specific special treatment. A-List Celebrities are capable of completing diamond and below operations. [Requires 725 reputation]
Pro-Heroes with the specific job of teaching the next generation, teachers work within Shin-U.A. and regularly interact with the heroic youth of the nation. Their task is to raise sprouts into tall trees, and most teachers are incredibly dedicated to this. Teachers operate with the Hero faction ranks but automatically start play at level three—New Sensation. As such, all teachers are treated as rank claims and judged to a higher standard than other applications.
